IB Eg |h|HB H New Bridge At Whittaker Road Massive bridge supports inch their way across the Sandy Run Creek as construction continues on state road 1164 linking Mooresboro to Boiling Springs. The new, two-lane bridge costs $218,000 and is scheduled for completion in December; it replaces a one-lane bridge there dating from the early ’30’s. The old bridge had been judged unsafe by the Department of Transportation, and school buses were not allowed to pass it. It was torn out of the creek in April. The unpaved state road, also named Whit taker Road after the late Ed Whittaker, in tersects North Main Street at the rescue squad building in Boiling Springs. $7,00 Per Year Single Copy 15 Cents Crest High Picks Poultry’s Honors Members of the poultry judging team at Crest Senior High School will represent the state of North Carolina in national com petition in November at Kansas City. The poultry judging team recently won first place in competition at the state level which now makes them eligible for national competition. to win the local federation contest as well as the district competition to be eligible for state competi tion. Crest placed high in all categories of the contests. The dairy judging team placed second. Members of that team included, Wayne Cogdell, Mark Whitaker, Chuck Pearson and Bobby Blanton. Poultry team members including Patti Whitaker, Mark Doty, Cameron DeBrew and Kelly Gragg were among five other teams representing the Crest chapter of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) in the 54th annual state convention in Raleigh. FFA members from across the state met to compete in a variety of face-to-face contests that grow out of the class work and skills students have developed in vocational agricultural training through the academic year. Agriculture teachers at Crest are Carl DeBrew and Bob Lail. The six teams that com peted on the state level had Placing third in the livestock judging competi tion were team members Mark Doty, Kelly Gra^g, Paul Mayes and Mike McKee. The landscape and nursery team placed fourth in that category. Team members were Jenny Bridges, Sandy Blanton, Angie Roberts and Patti Whitaker. The forestry team placed ninth in competition. Team members included Calvin Ledbetter, John Gold, Jim my Gibson and Donna Walker; and the agricultural tool and materials team from Crest placed 12th in competition. Matt Walker, Cecil Weaver, Jeff Hester and Kevin Blanton were members of that team. Rest After Fire ''k # % • ' • ' • ' ’• . Williams-Hunt At Lattimore Michel Marie Williams andx David Bingham Hunt were united in marriage Sunday at Lattimore Bap tist Church. The Rev. Joe Edwards officiated the noon wedding ceremony, while Mrs. J.A. Martin, organist, and Bob Blanton, vocalist, presented the wedding music. The bride is the daughter of Mr. James Allen Duke of Redding, Calif, and Mrs. Keith Eugene Gould of Woodland, Calif. Mrs. Robert L. Hunt Jr. of Lat timore and the late Mr. Hunt are parents of the bridgroom. employed as a chemical engineer with Carlon in Oklahoma City, Okla. The bride was given m marriage by her father. Mrs. David Martin was matron of honor and Nicole Williams, the bride’s daughter was flower girl. Jason Putnam was ring bearer and Mrs. Len Clem- mer of Gastonia stood at the register. The groom’s brother, Robert Lee Hunt III of Boone, N.C. was best man. Ushers were the groom’s brother John Hunt of Lat timore and the groom’s brother-in-law, Len Clem- mer of Gastonia. Members of Boiling Springs Rural fire department wet dry throats at the water tank after fighting a fire that spread over 30 acres of wheatfield off Camp’s Creek Road Saturday. No one was hurt in the three-hour blaze, but an abandoned outbuilding was destroyed. Three departments assisted Rural, for a total of 12 trucks.
